In the 1890s Catherine Evans copying a quilt pattern from a wedding present sewed thick cotton yarns, clipped the ends so it would fluff, and washed it to hold the yarns in by shrinking the fabric. Bedspreads made in this manner were coined chenille products. A French word meaning caterpillar, chenille became the term to describe a fabric that has thick raised yarn ends. Catherine sold her first spread for $2.50 and in the 1930s the process rapidly spread by women called haulers who took these stamped sheets and yarns to front porch workers. The bedspread income became instrumental in many area families surviving the depression. The demand grew and the first tufting machine was born. Later similar machines were developed using different fabrics to make carpet.

Today chenille is known for its luxurious texture and quality as being a touchably soft fabric. All of our products are handcrafted using only the highest quality imported 100% minky chenille that is washable and does not shed. Enjoy the soft touch of chenille.
